October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day – and the health spotlight will be firmly focused on a serious bone disease which affects nearly 65 million people worldwide.

Osteoporosis is a chronic progressive loss of bone mass, leading to brittle bones and increased risk of fractures. It’s especially common in women after the menopause, as falling oestrogen levels leads to greater bone loss, and half of women over 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture in their life.

Now in its 13th year, World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) is organised by the International Osteoporosis Federation and launches a year-long campaign to raise awareness about the need for active prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. The theme of this year’s WOD campaign is ‘Stop at One: Make your First Break Your Last’ and is to help raise awareness of secondary fracture prevention.

With an osteoporotic fracture happening an estimated once every 3 seconds, there’s never been a better time to get familiar on the facts about osteoporosis. A healthy diet and regular exercise help build healthy bones in adolescence and maintain peak bone mass in adult life.

Here at UCB, we are committed to broadening the range of therapies for osteoporosis, which can lead to recurrent bone fractures and severe, life-changing disability.
